Utah Sen. Mitt Romney calls Bernie Sanders 'all hat, no cattle' after Democratic debate

SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Mitt Romney touched off a Twitter fight with White House hopeful Bernie Sanders after musing about the Vermont senator's anger after the second Democratic presidential primary debate.

"Asked why @BernieSanders is so angry, the answer is simple: 28 years in Congress and never able to pass even a scintilla of his socialist agenda. All hat, no cattle," the Utah Republican and former presidential nominee tweeted Wednesday.

Sanders took a jab at Romney and President Donald Trump in response.

"I'm angry because multi-millionaires like you and Trump have rigged our economy at the middle class' expense. I'm angry because millions are living paycheck to paycheck. I'm angry because 34 million Americans are uninsured. Why doesn't that anger you?" Sanders tweeted.

Romney replied with, "Nice try, but socialism isn't the answer. If it was, maybe Bernie would have something to show for his 3 decades in Congress #AllHatNoCattle."

In Tuesday's debate, Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren clashed with moderate Democrats over "Medicare for All" and "wish-list economics" that moderates say would hurt the party's chances to take the White House in 2020.

Sanders, among two dozen candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, is running on a platform that includes "Medicare for All," free tuition at public universities and passing a Green New Deal.

On Wednesday, the Sutherland Institute held a forum titled, "Free Enterprise or Socialism — Where is America Headed?" during which Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, said socialist policies would lead to the nation's demise.

Some promoting a socialist agenda have tried to disguise it but not Sanders, he said.

"Sen. Sanders, God bless him, I'm so proud of him about this. He's honest with people. He's been a socialist his entire adult life. He runs as a socialist, as an independent. He's never tried to fool people," Stewart said.

Major League Soccer, Real Salt Lake suspend coach Mike Petke; require he attend anger management courses

SANDY — Real Salt Lake head coach Mike Petke's mouth has gotten him in trouble once again, and this time the punishment is severe.

Following a verbal outburst from Petke toward game officials on July 24 as RSL lost 1-0 to Tigres UANL in the inaugural Leagues Cup at Rio Tinto Stadium, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday that it has issued the following disciplinary actions for "the use of unacceptable and offensive language as well as repeated confrontational misconduct towards match officials":

— Petke will be suspended for three total games (he was already suspended for last Saturday's road contest against FC Dallas).

— MLS will fine him $25,000 and require that he attend anger management, sensitivity and diversity training beyond the training that all MLS clubs attend at the beginning of each season.

In addition, RSL will be suspending Petke from all club activity for two weeks without pay and he will be required to issue written apologies to both the league and the individual referees.

Finally, Petke was suspended by the Leagues Cup Competition Committee for three future Leagues Cup matches since RSL was eliminated from this year's competition on July 24.

"There is absolutely no place for this type of behavior in our society, and Major League Soccer does not tolerate the repugnant language used by Mr. Petke," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. "All MLS players, staff and fans must know that these comments are unacceptable, and I am extremely disappointed that a leader of one of our clubs used such insensitive language. We are committed to providing an environment in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect at all times."

A statement from RSL read in part: "We hold everyone in our organization — particularly the leadership — to the highest standards and expect them to treat everyone with dignity and respect. We have the utmost respect for the referees, PRO and Major League Soccer and will be working with the League to ensure that everyone in our organization treats all referees, players, coaches and fans with the dignity, respect, civility and professionalism that is consistent with our values.

Although we appreciate Coach Petke's passion and drive to win, it should never come at the expense of those values. We support and agree with the League's decision on this matter. ... As a club we apologize to our fans for this incident and going forward will continue to demand that all staff adhere to the highest personal standards, without excuse."

Petke has been twice suspended before for three games total since he became RSL's head coach in 2017.

Ute defensive end Bradlee Anae took heat at Pac-12 Media Day after repeating a line someone dropped about playing in LaVell Edwards Stadium.

"There's nothing worse," he said, "than playing in front of 60,000 sober white people."

Alleged serial child sex abuser from Grantsville now faces 24 felonies

Alleged serial child sex abuser from Grantsville now faces 24 felonies

TOOELE — A Grantsville man already facing 13 felonies for allegedly abusing at least three children now faces additional charges.

On Friday, Mark Swan, 48, was charged with an additional two counts of rape of a child, object rape of a child, three counts of sodomy on a child, and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. He was also charged with three counts of sex abuse of a child, a second-degree felony.

In total, Swan now faces 24 felonies in two cases, including a total of seven counts of sodomy on a child, five counts of object rape of a child, two counts of rape of a child, two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, three counts of sex abuse of a child, and three counts of attempted sexual abuse of a child.

The investigation into Swan's alleged extensive years of abuse of multiple children began July 18 when a parent contacted police to report a family acquaintance had inappropriately touched their three children, according to a police probable cause statement for his arrest.

After news of his arrest was reported by the media, additional potential victims stepped forward.

According to the new charges filed Friday, a girl under the age of 14 was interviewed on July 22 and "disclosed that she had been consistently sexually abused for the last two years by the defendant, a family friend who often babysat her at his home when the victim's parents were out of town."

The girl told police that she had been abused so many times that she couldn't recall every incident, according to the charges. Prosecutors even noted in their probable cause affidavit that "the charges represent a fraction of the number times the defendant sexually abused the child victim."

The abuse occurred as recently as the Independence Day weekend, the charges state.

A second boy, under the age of 14, also reported to police that on three of the five occasions he was at Swan's house, Swan touched him inappropriately over his clothing, according to charging documents.

Swan is currently being held in the Tooele County Jail without bail. A bail hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.

Utah Celtic FC dominates Lou Fusz Elam, wins U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship

Utah Celtic FC are national champions.

The Utah County-based youth soccer team (19U) dominated Lou Fusz Elam (Missouri) Sunday morning in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series final at Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kansas, winning the national title game, 9-1.

"It's awesome. It's been a great experience working with the girls. I've been the coach for about five years now and seeing all the hard work pay off with the national championship, especially because this is their last year together, they're all heading off to college. Our last game together is a national championship," said head coach Steve Magleby.

Kate Schirmer, a Lone Peak High alum and Snow College signee, netted a hat trick to lead the way for Celtic — she finished the tournament with seven goals scored — and was one of seven Celtic players to find the back of the net.

"The way that our team plays, we kind of wear teams down. After a long week, it's hard to kind of keep up with how our team plays. It's just a testament to the girls for just sticking with our process and wearing teams down. Everything just kind of came together today. They were all firing on all cylinders and everyone on the same page. It was a lot of fun to watch them play," Magleby said.

Among the other goal scorers were Brecken Mozingo, a UCLA signee, Tara Warner (BYU), Anna Pickering (Utah), Samantha Brady (Minnesota), Megan Astle (Utah State) and Rebecca Olsen (Salt Lake Community College).

"For every coach, that's what it's all about. Getting these players opportunities to fulfill their dreams and play at a high level. It's the byproduct of focusing on the girls and how they're doing and having a great team. It's been fun helping them through that process and seeing them achieve their goals. I'm excited to continue to watch them and see how they do at the next level," Magleby said.

The national title is the first claimed by a Utah-based team in 40-plus years and caps an impressive run by Utah Celtic FC.

The club is five-time State Cup Champions, two-time Region IV Champions, two-time Desert Premier League Champions, 2017 US Youth Soccer National Champion Finalists and, of course, 2019 US Youth Soccer National Champions.

Pickering started the goal scoring in the 12th minute of the first half, a goal that was quickly followed by another (Warner, 20') and then a pair of scores by Schirmer (25' and 33').

Celtic then stretched their lead to 5-0 in the opening minutes of the second half on a strike by Mozingo (49')

Late goals were added by Brady (73'), Astle (88') and Olsen (90'), with the single goal scored by Lou Fusz Elam coming in the 85th minute off the foot of Jessica Preusser.

Utah Celtic FC finished the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series a near perfect 15-0, the only blemish coming when they drew with Lou Fusz Elam 0-0 earlier in the national championships series.

High school football: Canyon View Falcons 2019 preview

High school football: Canyon View Falcons 2019 preview

High school football: Canyon View Falcons 2019 preview

Note: Canyon View finished with a 3-7 overall record in 2018 and was fifth in Region 9 with a 2-4 record. It did not qualify for the 4A playoffs.

Canyon View 2018 offensive and defensive stats

CEDAR CITY — In his first season at Canyon View last year, Chris Sawyers said he inherited a pretty talented team but a group that he said "hadn't spent any time in the weight room."

The Falcons still beat Cedar and Hurricane in Region 9 play, but it wasn't enough to secure a playoff berth.

Sawyers said this year's team might not be as talented as a year ago, but they've spent a lot of time in the weight room and are "very, very strong."

That added strength throughout the team, combined with the players having a year under their belt with Sawyers' offense and defense, and there's reason to be excited at Canyon View in 2019.

"That first year we kind of came into our own late in the season and that's one of our biggest advantages this year: the kids feel comfortable in our system," said Sawyers.

Canyon View ranked 15th in 4A scoring offense last season and 20th in scoring defense, but a jump in both of those areas is certainly a possibility based on a strong summer from the Falcons.

Canyon View only returns a couple of varsity starters from last year, as most of the returning experience with Sawyers' offense and defense came at the junior varsity level. Those players will need to adjust quickly to the speed of varsity football.

The Falcons open the season with a home game against 2A's Beaver, a good chance to try to build confidence against a lower-classification team before heading into the grind of Region 9.

Canyon View Falcons at a glance

Coach: Chris Sawyers is entering his second season as head coach at Canyon View after putting together a 3-7 record in his debut season last year. He's a graduate of Carson High School in Nevada.

Coach Sawyers comments on new UHSAA RPI:

"I think teams like our team that have struggled to get into the playoffs love it. I think that with our strength of schedule in our region, which is if not the best, one of the best regions in the state, is going to benefit us immensely. I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be pretty cool. There were some years where our region had four teams in the (semifinals), it's changed a little bit the last few years. I think it will be really good for us."

Key offensive returning starters

Canyon View's strong athlete will be a very key position on the offensive line at guard.

He's a very big tackle who should be able to protect the quarterback despite some of the strong pass rushes in Region 9.

Coach Sawyers comments on new QB Brisin Jake:

"He has lots of arm talent; basically with Brisin, our success is going to depend on how much he can digest and do quickly. How often can he figure out what is the right read."

Coach Sawyers comments on building continuity between new QB and new receivers:

"Football has changed so much over the last 20 years. If it wasn't so important I don't think a lot of these coaches, including myself, would be out there working all summer long to make it happen. I can't overstate how important it is to make sure our kids are all on the same page. You obviously have turnover at positions, you just hope that you're doing a good job developing younger kids."

Coach Sawyers comments on strength of the offensive line:

"Our offensive line should be one of our strengths this year. It was a weaknesses for us last year even though we had some really talented kids, just not very strong. Kysun Parker is a big tackle for us, he's about 6-foot-4, 285, he's got a lot of people looking at him, he's a real special kid, going to be a junior. He's only 15, he's a huge 15-year-old. On the other side we have Ethan Rigtrup, who's also a junior. He's a little leaner at 215, but both of those kids are really athletic and they're going to give us a chance to be pretty good. On interior we have a senior, Joe Pulica, who is a very talented kid, probably strongest kid in our program."

Keys for offensive success in 2019:

Brisin Jake could be one of the best receivers in Region 9 this year, according to Sawyers, but he needs his senior to play quarterback with a lack of depth at the position. It's not his natural position and will take time for him to pick it up at full varsity speed. How quickly he adjusts will have a huge bearing on Canyon View's success this year.

Coach Sawyers comments on returning starter Joe Pulica:

"I hope to start another kid defensively and use Joe as a roller (and then starter him full time on offensive line), but every team has those kids that are just flat out more physical than the other kids, and he's our strongest dude for sure."

Coach Sawyers comments on strong linebacking core:

"We're pretty strong and we move pretty well. We have real depth at linebacker this year, which was the place we had no depth last year. I'd say we have seven kids for four spots and we have pretty good backups there. We're blessed with those kinds of bodies. Tanner Hardin will play our will linebacker spot and he's a next-level kid. He'll go play somewhere next year, I just don't know what level. He started with football so late he's a late bloomer, but he's a special kid and can really run."

Keys for defensive success in 2019:

Canyon View allowed five touchdowns per game last season, and Sawyers said reversing those struggles has a lot to do with getting lined up correctly. He said it's going to be extremely important for his players to recognize the formations in-game throughout the season and get lined up quickly to defend specific plays. Sawyers believes he has a really good defense if they figure those important details.

Bottom line

In his first season as head coach, Sawyers guided the Falcons to region wins over Hurricane and rival Cedar. They were also competitive against Snow Canyon, all indicators that he's got the program headed in the right direction. There's still a huge gap to close, though, to compete at the top of Region 9 as his team suffered blowout losses to the top three teams in Region 9. If this team can add a couple more wins to its total and finish near .500, that would be a huge accomplishment.

Brad Rock: Urban Meyer can thank Kyle Whittingham for this

SALT LAKE CITY — Mingled with his thoughts on caution and confidence, scheduling and personnel, Kyle Whittingham let slip that Urban Meyer will be on Utah's campus next month.

It will be a social visit from the man who got it started.

It's not hard to connect the dots between Meyer's two years at Utah and the Utes being picked to win the Pac-12 this season. The original stirrings came when Ron McBride figured out how to beat BYU. But the serious stuff took flight under Meyer.

Or did it?

In reality, Whittingham deserves as much credit as Meyer. It's generally agreed that Meyer lit the Utes, going 22-2 and taking them to the Fiesta Bowl, before moving on. But Whittingham had been defensive coordinator for eight years before Meyer arrived, and on staff at Utah since 1994.

Meyer brought explosive offense and the program spiked. But what of the defense?

Whit: I got that.

In the three years prior to Meyer's arrival, Utah ranked 10th, 17th and 29th nationally in total defense. It ranked 19th and 40th in total defense during Meyer's two years.

What will Meyer find when he returns next month? For one thing, one of the nation's finest defenses — again. Utah finished 15th in defense last year. But Meyer will also see depth at nearly every position, a sparkling Eccles Football Center and a stadium expansion project on the way. The Utes have sold out 56 consecutive games, dating back to 2009.

He'll also find a team that has a realistic chance at the Rose Bowl.

In other words, an operation that's still going places.

The Utes open camp Wednesday, a week after being projected by Pac-12 media to win the conference. But it doesn't stop there. ESPN's Ryan Leaf rates them a dark horse to make the College Football Playoff. Longtime expert Phil Steele takes it one step further by giving them a shot at the national championship. Numerous others have them playing in the Rose Bowl.

Utah was a middle-of-the-pack offense in the conference last year and added proven offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. Five Utes are on the all-conference preseason first team and three on the second team. Yet there is a shade of skepticism in the early polls. The Utes are typically ranked in the mid-teens — which says more about the underperforming Pac-12 than it does the Utes. CBS Sports has them No. 23. The Associated Press rates them No. 16, while NCAA.com slots them at 15 and Athlon Sports 13.

Still, Meyer will find a more highly recruited and deeper roster than when he was at Utah. Whittingham took them to the Sugar Bowl, guided them through choppy waters as a new Pac-12 team, and finally, last December, navigated his way to the conference title game.

Meanwhile, he has defeated BYU — the Team Down South, in Urbanspeak — eight straight times.

Now Whittngham has hopes soaring for the new season. But he is extra careful to downplay the preseason hype. At the conference media day, he said the coaching staff has already talked to the team about "ignoring the noise."

Utah didn't get here overnight. It took Whittingham four post-Meyer years to reach the Sugar Bowl, two more seasons before entering the Pac-12. The Utes didn't have a winning conference record until their fourth season. It took eight years to land in the championship game. They continue to struggle with Washington, having lost all but one of the seven games they've played since joining the Pac-12. But Whittingham says his realization moment came in the 2015 game at Oregon, which the Utes won 62-20.

"They're a quality program. They're winners," he said. "And to go up there and to be able to win convincingly, I think that was a breakthrough in our program that, hey, we can stand toe-to-toe with anybody, home or away, and if we play the way we're supposed to play, we've got a chance."

They have one now, too.

None of this will be news to Meyer. Utah has made enough noise to assure that. But Meyer's first words upon seeing Whittingham next month should be, "Nice setup you have here." His second should be, "Thanks for minding the shop."

Watch: NAACP leader who introduced President Nelson explains the 'wow moment' he had

The Rev. Amos Brown says he had a "wow moment" when reflecting upon two signature hymns used by the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco — "Lift Every Voice and Sing" — and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — "Come, Come, Ye Saints."

The Rev. Brown, pastor of the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco, explains in a new Church News video, "All is Well," how the two hymns tell the stories of people who "excel, achieve and remain loyal to their God."

On July 21, the Rev. Brown introduced President Russell M. Nelson at the NAACP convention in Detroit. The video shows him greeting President Nelson and his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson, and linking arms with the Latter-day Saint president.

"When I learned more about President Nelson's background, I saw some incredible similarities," the Rev. Brown said.

"It can be well in this nation when we lock arms, as I locked arms with President Nelson, not as black and white, not as Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Baptist, but as children of God who are about loving everybody and bringing hope, happiness and good health to all of God's children.
