1 dead after driver falls asleep, drifts across U.S. 89 in Logan

LOGAN — The driver of an SUV fell asleep near the south end of Logan on Sunday, crashing into oncoming traffic and killing a 29-year-old man, police said. Several others were injured.

The victim's name has not been released as police seek to notify family members of his death. A woman and an infant travelling with him in a southbound SUV were transported to a hospital and were expected to survive, said Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen.

The northbound driver who fell asleep crossed a lane divider and crashed into the oncoming car at intersection of 2200 South about 2:30 p.m., Jensen said. The driver and four passengers in the car all were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives didn't immediately know the gender of the driver who dozed off, Jensen said. The crash closed a portion of the highway Sunday afternoon as crews cleaned up and investigated.

Two other cars also became involved in the crash. One driver sustained minor injuries and declined transport to a hospital; another had a windshield damaged by debris.
