Windows XP Manual

Windows Initiation

Windows is an operating system, that is, the one in charge of controlling and directing the computer, translating
the instructions into a language that the hardware – physical parts of the computer – can understand. The
difference with the traditional operating system is in the intuitive way using drawings or icons of
communicate with the PC instead of typing commands.

Windows is the official successor version of Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and is notable for
significant changes in the user environment, in the form of work, as well as for its functions and
auxiliary programs.

The modifications are of such magnitude that it is possible that several previous applications of Windows are not
able to execute properly under Windows and have to be replaced by updated versions
(in spite of Microsoft publicity to the contrary ).

One of the features most expected by Windows 3.1 users is to be able to use names
of plus 8 characters. In Windows XP a file can be called "Letter to Bill Gates" without any problem.
The names of files and directories in Windows XP can contain up to 255 characters, blanks
included.

As you will see in the following pages, Windows XP allows to perform the same action -copy a file,
start an application
