The Belgian Government has broken down, after the Flemish nationalists of the N-VA have left in protest at the Prime Minister's decision, Charles Michel , to sign the United Nations Global Compact for Migration.
The N-VA march leaves a minority executive led by the liberal party MR of Michel with the Flemish Christian Democrats of the CD & V and the liberal flamenco Open VLD that will try, however, survive until the next legislative elections on May 26.
The prime minister has confirmed that on Monday will sign the Global Compact in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, where The UN summit on migration will take place, and today it has reorganized its cabinet to replace the three ministers and two secretaries of state of the N-VA for other members of the Government.
Michel has defended that Belgium had "committed" to the UN Pact and that the N-VA had participated in the negotiations, so his change of opinion a few weeks ago to request abstention created a "deep division".
The government crisis had been developing in recent weeks since the Flemish nationalists, who initially supported it, announced that they opposed signing the pact on the grounds that would undermine Belgium's sovereignty over immigration, in spite of not being binding.
Still, they will support the budgets
"Those who approve the migratory pact, although there is no consensus in the Government, put the N-VA out of him "said the president of the formation, Bart de Weber. The Prime Minister's response came immediately: in a televised message he confirmed that he will go to Marrakech and has declared the march of the N-VA "confirmed".
The Government will have with 52 seats in Parliament, while the 31 deputies of the N-VA, the party most voted in the elections of 2014, go to swell the ranks of the opposition, with 98 positions. For the time being, no party has requested the call for early elections, although the opposition will not give their support.
Paradoxically, the N-VA has announced that will support the budgets for 2019 and will adopt "a position constructive "in other matters, confirming that the insurmountable difference, after four years of a government of difficult ideological balance, has been immigration.
