To know the history of Slovenian independence one must go back almost 30 years in the past, to 1990. The Demos party won the first democratic elections in Slovenia, which then belonged to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Demos, contrary to the communist regime, raised an independentist referendum without the support of the central government ] that resulted in more than 90% participation and 88.2% of the votes for yes, according to the journalistic reports of that time.
After this first step, Slovenia declared itself independent on June 25, 1991, which provoked a confrontation with the federal armed forces of Yugoslavia in a conflict known as the 'Ten Days War'.
The short conflict ended or on July 7 of the same year with the agreement of Brioni, signed in the Islands of the same name by both contenders thanks to international mediation and that laid the foundations of a future independence that would not be recognized internationally until the end of 1991 and the rest of 1992.
According to Slovenian estimates, the conflict left less than a hundred deaths and thousands of wounded.
