Four turnovers in 3rd quarter lead to Utah Utes' collapse in 31-20 Holiday Bowl loss to Northwestern Wildcats

SAN DIEGO — The 17th-ranked Utah Utes turned the ball over four times in the third quarter, and the 22nd-ranked Northwestern Wildcats used the takeaways to turn a 17-point halftime deficit into an 11-point lead and ultimately won Monday night's Holiday Bowl, 31-20.

Up 20-3 at intermission thanks to tremendous play from quarterback Jason Shelley and its defense, Utah fumbled twice and Shelley threw two interceptions—one his fault, one that bounced off tight end Cole Fotheringham—in the third frame and the Wildcats scored four touchdowns to take a 31-20 advantage and the Utes couldn't rally.

Utah had six turnovers on the night in all.

Both teams finished the 2018 season with 9-5 records after winning their respective conference division titles.

Northwestern quarterback Clayton Shelley went 21-of-30 for 241 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Running back Isaiah Bowser rushed for 70 yards on 23 carries. Shelley went 27-of-45 for 302 yards and two touchdowns in addition to the interceptions.
