During the month of October 2018, the 5th Hactoberfest took place and I put my granite to contribute to some free software projects.
First of all, what is that Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is an event that lasts the whole month of October and that tries to encourage different people to collaborate with free software projects that they want to contribute as much as they can.
This Hacktoberfest is organized by ] DigitalOcean GitHub and Twilio and the requirements to be met are few and simple:
- The Hacktoberfest is open to anyone who wants to participate
- do 5 pull request of quality to projects in public repositories hosted on GitHub and with free licenses.
- You have to register on your website during the period from 1 to October 31.
In summary, you Register, choose the project or GitHub projects that interest you and be free and collaborate on it sending as minimum 5 pull request to the project. That yes those pull request must be significant things, it is not worth changing a comma, or remove a space from a text.
And what do you gain in exchange for participation in the Hacktoberfest?
Contribute to a free project and make it better with your contributions and help, and also a geek shirt (like the image that opens the article) and some stickers.
But if I'm not a developer, how did I participate in the Hacktoberfest? [19659005] If the idea is to contribute in some way in repositories of free projects and I have very basic notions about programming how did I participate in the Hacktoberfest? What contributions did I make?
Well, one of the things that I usually participate in different projects is in software translation or adaptation of documentation to Spanish.
That's one way to disseminate the project because if more people can use it in a comfortable way, such as breaking the language barrier, because more target audience will have more people coming, more people will try it and more developers may participate. [19659005] So if you also want to participate and you are not a developer either, there is always a task in which you can perhaps contribute. The translation is one, but also correction of syntactic errors, creation of graphic material, etc … Find what you would like to do and what you have knowledge or are interested in learning.
In which repositories did I participate? ]
You had to make a minimum of 5 commits that were approved. They could be in the same project or different. I did several but perhaps of all I would highlight for example:
- The translation into Spanish of the software caliber-web
- The translation and updating of the documentation of Mastodon
- And perhaps the project I participated in the most, is the software translation Course Generator. Software to organize your careers and much more. That I translated in full and will be included in the next version
As you can see anyone with a desire and a little knowledge can participate in a free software project. You can also contribute if you feel like learning and motivation.
Next year maybe you will also sign up and contribute with what you know. But you do not have to wait a year, you can start today looking for something to collaborate on.
