Probation ordered for Utah woman who spiked husband's wine with generic Ativan

SALT LAKE CITY — An Ivins woman who police say drugged her husband's wine because she "didn't want to deal with him" has been ordered to three years of probation.

Sarah Nasrene Cooper, 30, pleaded guilty in 5th District Court in October to surreptitious administering of a substance, a third-degree felony.

Prosecutors originally said she crushed 10 pills of Alprazolam — more commonly known by the brand name Xanax — and seven Tylenols and put them in a coffee cup filled with wine before serving it to her husband.

But court documents show she admitted to secretly spiking the drink with Lorazepam — the generic form of the anti-anxiety drug Ativan — on June 25, which sickened him and made him vomit.

The husband took a drink of the wine "and quickly noticed it tasted funny," the charging documents say. He saw white chunks and powder mixed in when he poured it out in the kitchen sink.

Cooper told detectives "she was not trying to hurt her husband, she was just trying to make it so she didn't have to deal with him tonight," according to the charges.

Judge Michael Westfall sentenced her on Dec. 19 to write an apology letter to her husband and pay a fine of $1,543. He also ordered Cooper to undergo a substance-abuse evaluation and to avoid alcohol and drugs.

The conviction carried a possible penalty of up to five years in prison, but Westfall suspended the time behind bars.
