OREM — A Provo police officer was shot late Saturday in a parking lot and later died at a local hospital.
The shooting occurred in a parking lot near the Bed Bath and Beyond store in Orem, 50 W. University Parkway.
Few details were available, but Provo police detective Nick Dupaix said a suspect was in custody and there was no threat to the public. He later confirmed that the officer had died.
Bystander video sent to the Deseret News shortly after the shooting shows multiple police officers surrounding a white truck in the parking lot and appears to show an officer walk away from the truck and then kneel down in the parking lot. Someone later appears to help the officer move toward some parked police vehicles.
Officers can then be seen dragging someone out of the vehicle after yelling and a confrontation. Shortly after that, police appear to carry someone who had been near the police vehicles to an SUV. That SUV is then seen speeding out of the parking lot with lights and sirens activated.
Investigators said they would release more details Sunday morning. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
