SALT LAKE CITY — As the first week of the 2019 legislative session wraps up, Utah senators are closing in on a final vote in their chamber on Medicaid expansion that alters the voter-approved Proposition 3. A vote on SB96 could come Friday.
Other issues expected to be discussed at the Statehouse during the day include:
• The Senate Education Committee is considering SB102, which would alter the way capital facilities are funded at Utah's public colleges.
• The House Political Subdivisions Committee will debate HB150 which would enact licensing and operational standards for trampoline parks.
• Senate Business and Labor Committee members are considering SB110, which enacts provisions related to family and medical unpaid leave.
Here's what happened on Jan. 30, the fourth day of the 2019 session:
- A bill that would allow bicyclists in Utah to roll through stop signs and red lights was greenlighted Thursday by the House Transportation Committee.
- Gov. Gary Herbert's plan to slash the state sales tax rate to just 1.75 percent was shot down Thursday by the lawmaker working on what's expected to be the GOP legislative leadership's tax package.
- Sen. Luz Escamilla, D-Salt Lake City, said she plans to file a bill to create a data "baseline" so Utah can start tracking environmental impact in the Utah Inland Port Authority's jurisdiction, about 16,000 acres in Salt Lake City's northwest quadrant.
