NEPHI — A motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon after colliding with a truck that was pulling a horse trailer on a canyon road near Nephi, troopers said.
The motorcycle was traveling west on state Route 32 just before 4 p.m. as a Ford F-350 was driving east. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash occurred in a "long gradual curve."
The motorcyclist was driving in the wrong lane while rounding the curve and the truck driver tried to move to the right to avoid crashing with the motorcycle, the UHP said. The motorcycle, however, hit the truck's front left side.
The motorcyclist died on impact, troopers said. Additional details about the motorcyclist, including their name and gender, were not immediately released.
The Ford driver was able to drive his vehicle off the road and stop, troopers said. He was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured in the crash.
According to the UHP, troopers found evidence of alcohol at the scene of the collision. The Ford driver told troopers he drank alcohol earlier in the day. He was given a field sobriety test and consented to a blood draw, troopers said. It is not believed he was over the .05 blood-alcohol content limit.
Troopers said the motorcyclist "smelled of alcohol."
"There was a helmet at the scene but we do not believe it was being worn. Both tires on the motorcycle were very bald and had steel showing," the UHP said.
