What does a good Utah Jazz pre-draft workout look like? Six players will find out on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY — Grayson Allen was one of six prospects invited to Zions Bank Basketball Campus on June 4, 2018, for a pre-draft workout at the Utah Jazz's practice facility.

Even while matched up against a competitive group of college studs, the former Duke star stood out in an hourlong session, then drilled 66 of his 100 shots during the infamous Jazz 100 drill at the very end.

"It went really well. It was a good workout," Allen said, before being taken 21st overall by the Jazz at the 2018 NBA draft. "I definitely was sucking wind at the beginning because of the altitude, but it was a great workout.

"We competed, everyone who came here competed and we played really hard," he added. "It's a lot of fun when guys bring energy like that."

Allen recently completed his rookie campaign, and now the Jazz will bring in another crop of draft hopefuls for a Saturday workout at the team's practice facility.

Chris Clemons (Campbell), Jalen Hudson (Florida), Nathan Knight (William & Mary), Kevin Samuel (TCU), Tres Tinkle (Oregon State) and Lindell Wigginton (Iowa State) are the first six players that will workout for the Jazz in 2019.

Traditionally, Jazz pre-draft workouts have consisted of conditioning, drills and scrimmages followed by the Jazz 100. The Jazz 100 consists of players shooting 100 times in a row from various spots around the 3-point line, while exhausted from the workout and as many of them experience the thin Utah air for the first time of their lives.

Although results from the drills aren't shared, the best shooters are able to make at least 70, but anything above 50 is also eye-popping because it shows their mental toughness and ability to push through fatigue.

The Jazz are projected to pick No. 23 and No. 53 in the 2019 NBA draft on Thursday, June 20, but those picks could also be good assets for trades or free agency this offseason as Utah is looking to shake up the roster.

Pre-draft workouts have proven to be a key factor during the offseason, especially since rising star Donovan Mitchell made a big impression on the franchise with his stellar performance during the summer of 2017. That pushed the Jazz to trade up in the draft with Denver to get Mitchell as the 13th overall pick — which at the time seemed far-fetched.

Details were initially kept private, but Mitchell did so well against National Player of the Year Frank Mason, former Villanova star Josh Hart, Duke's Amile Jefferson, Virginia's London Perrantes and Florida's Devin Robinson that Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey told all onlookers to keep quiet on how good he really was.

Although situations like those come a dime a dozen, Jazz Vice President of Player Personnel Walt Perrin will be on-site over the weekend to see if they can strike lightning in a bottle yet again in Salt Lake City.

Allen's workout was also notable, alongside All-Pac 12 First Team guard Aaron Holiday, Villanova's Consensus National Player of the Year Jalen Brunson, Creighton's Khyri Thomas, San Diego State's Malik Pope and former Louisville big Ray Spalding.

"I don't know if I've ever gotten this many guys in for whatever particular pick we have so I don't pat myself on the back, but I will this time," Perrin told the media following Allen's workout.
