Police say circumstances surrounding shooting are suspicious; teen’s car missing

TAYLORSVILLE — A 17-year-old girl was killed in a shooting in Taylorsville Saturday night, police said.

Kaylissa O’Leary, a senior at Copper Hills High School, was at a party in a home at 3142 W. Havea Circle (5475 South) where kids were reportedly playing with a gun when the shooting occurred about 10:20 p.m., said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray.

Police originally reported the shooting as an accident, but by Sunday afternoon they were calling it “suspicious.”

“Right now we are investigating this as a suspicious death. Some of the reasons behind that is that the partygoers fled the scene, so we haven’t been able to talk to all the people who were there. And in addition to that, our victim’s vehicle that she drove to the party in is missing,” Gray said.

Some partygoers remained at the house when police arrived, but many left the home. Police do not know how many people were there at the time of the shooting, Gray said.

As of Sunday afternoon, police did not know who fired the gun. The person who called 911 after the shooting said the teen had shot herself.

Kaylissa did not live at the house. Officers Sunday had not been able to find her car — a blue 2010 Honda Civic with license plate No. F944HG — and were asking for the public’s help locating it.

Those with information about the vehicle or the party can call Unified police at 801-743-7000.
