ORDERVILLE, Kane County — A Kanab woman was killed in a rollover crash on Sunday when a U-Haul forced a pickup truck off U.S. 89, police said.
Utah Highway Patrol on Monday identified the woman as 20-year-old Charlee Noteman.
Three vehicles — a car, a U-Haul and a pickup truck, in that order — were driving south on the highway south of Orderville in Kane County on Sunday afternoon, Utah Highway Patrol said. All three vehicles were in the right lane.
The pickup truck moved to the left lane to pass the U-Haul and car, according to UHP, just before the U-Haul also moved left to pass the car.
The pickup truck was forced off the road to avoid the U-Haul and rolled down an embankment, ejecting Noteman and two other passengers from the back seat, UHP said. Noteman died at the scene, while the other two passengers were “severely injured” and flown to a hospital.
None of the passengers in the back seat were wearing seat belts, UHP said. Two passengers in the front seat of the truck, who were wearing seat belts, suffered minor injuries.
“Given the the minimal damage to the passenger compartment, it is likely the rear passengers would have not been as severely injured and killed had they been properly restrained,” UHP said in a statement.
The driver of the U-Haul, who did not stop after the crash, “may not have realized their movement forced the pickup off the road,” UHP said.
As of Monday afternoon, a GoFundMe page to help Noteman’s family cover funeral expenses had raised more than $6,000.
Anyone with information regarding the U-Haul is asked to call Kane County dispatch at 435-644-2349.
