DRAPER — No injuries were reported from a house fire Monday when an off-duty firefighter who lived a block away spotted smoke and hurried over to alert the occupants.
The fire started on an exterior deck and was fueled by a gas barbecue. When the Unified firefighter arrived at the house on Long Tail Drive, he discovered the rear deck fully engulfed in flames and helped evacuate two adults who had been working in the basement, said Draper Fire Chief Clint Smith.
Smith said the fire, reported at about 3:25 p.m., spread to the attic and master bedroom and was knocked down in about 20 minutes. He said the cause of the fire, which did enough damage to displace the occupants, is under investigation but the propane barbecue grill had not been used Monday.
Extra crews were called to the scene because of concern about the effect of the day’s high temperatures on firefighters, Smith said.
