Undefeateds

After six weeks of the 2019 season, 10 teams remain unbeaten. Four teams notched their first victories — Canyon View, Clearfield, Hillcrest and Taylorsville — leaving 10 that have yet to win. One game this week matches undefeated teams: Park City at Mountain View in a Region 10 showdown.

Of the unbeaten teams, two reside in Class 6A — Corner Canyon and Skyridge in Region 4. They could meet as undefeated teams on Oct. 10 (week 9). Salem Hills (Region 8) is off to its best-ever start at 6-0 and the lone unscathed team in Class 5A.

The winner of Park City at Mountain View will be the sole unbeaten school in Class 4A. Class 3A has three undefeated teams: Morgan (Region 13), Manti and North Sanpete (both Region 14).

Manti invades North Sanpete on Oct. 4 (week 8) in what could be a battle of unbeaten squads, although North Sanpete has a tough game at once-beaten Juab this week.

Beaver and Millard represent the perfect teams in Class 2A; they meet on Oct. 11 (week 9).

First-time meetings (6)

  • Cedar Valley at Tooele
  • Crimson Cliffs at Snow Canyon
  • Lone Peak at Corner Canyon
  • Mountain Ridge at Payson

Howdy stranger

Two games feature teams that haven’t faced off for at least 10 seasons. Gunnison Valley defeated Duchesne 20-14 in 1991 in their only previous meeting. Cottonwood and Highland meet for the 21st time, but first since 2008, with Highland leading the series 14-6.

Most Improved

Farmington leads the state as the most-improved team so far this season, moving from 2-9 in 2018 to 5-1 this year, an improvement of 5.5 games. Kanab (2-9 to 4-1), North Summit (0-10 to 3-3) and Woods Cross (2-8 to 5-1) are 5.0 games better. (The NCAA calculates this by taking the difference in year-to-year victories and the difference in losses, adding the two numbers and dividing by 2.)

Milestones

Provo seeks its 450th victory as the Bulldogs visit Wasatch, and Ogden also goes for its 450th win when the Tigers host Uintah.

Among coaches, Les Hamilton directs his 200th contest in 17 years. That includes stints at Grantsville (25 games), Alta (79), Hunter (10), Pleasant Grove (45) and currently at Summit Academy (41st).

A Salem Hills victory over Springville matches the school’s longest winning streak of seven games set in 2014.

Longest current winning steaks

  • Corner Canyon — 18 games
  • Beaver, Millard, Mountain View, North Sanpete, Park City, Salem Hills — 6
  • Dixie, Lehi, Manti, Morgan, Riverton, Skyridge — 5

Last week …

Clearfield won its 250th game. … Mountain View posted its first shutout since 2010, a span of 88 games. … Desert Hills tripped Cedar City 56-55 in double-overtime; the combined 111 points ranks as the fifth highest scoring overtime — and the 24th most combined points — in Utah prep history.

Career stat update

Here’s this week’s update on Milford’s Bryson Barnes. He’s the only current player who ranks in the top-20 in all-time career categories that Felt’s Facts tracks.

  • Touchdown passes — State record (120)
  • Touchdowns responsible for — second (159), but 54 short of the state record (held by Jordan’s Austin Kafentzis, 2011-14)
  • Total offense — sixth (11,272 yards), and 105 yards from overtaking fifth place (held by Lehi’s Cammon Cooper, 2014-17)
  • Passing yards — sixth (9,645), and 13 yards away from fifth (held by Pine View’s Kody Wilstead, 2011-14)
  • Passing completions — seventh (537) and eight short of sixth (held by Jordan’s Alex Hart, 2008-09)
  • Passing attempts — ninth (936) and three shy of eighth (held by American Fork’s Tanner Smith, 2013-15)
