BOUNTIFUL — The Gun Range fire that raged through the Bountiful foothills in the early morning hours Friday has been full contained, fire officials said Sunday night.
The fire, which investigators believe was started by an abandoned campfire, destroyed three houses and damaged five others. About 400 homes had to be evacuated as crews fought to save structures and contain the flames.
The evacuation orders were lifted Saturday morning, allowing residents to return to their homes. The fire burned slightly more than 300 acres and impacted homeowners in Bountiful and Centerville.
The 100% containment means the entire perimeter of the fire is contained, according to a statement from the South Davis Metro Fire Department.
“(Residents) may see some light smoke on the interior of the fire area, crews will remain on the mountain over the next several days watching for hot spots,” the statement said. “There is a significant amount of ash on the mountain as well. Until we get rain to wet it down, you may see dust or smoke as the winds blow the ash around.”
Residents may also continue to smell smoke until rain can soak the entire mountain area, including the burned sections.
“The Forest Service has a team that will evaluate the total burn area to determine if there is a risk for mudslides related to the burn area,” the fire department said. “Their initial report is that the fire did not burn deep enough into the earth for this to be an issue, but they will give us an updated report once their teams have completed their evaluation.”
