SALT LAKE CITY — Dominate on both sides of the ball.

That was the key to success for No. 13 Utah in bouncing back for a 38-13 win over Washington State on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Utes snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cougars by taking control from the start. Utah improved to 4-1 and 1-1 in Pac-12 play, with Washington State dropping to 3-2 and 0-2.

Here’s a look at three takeaways that defined this game.

24 unanswered

Washington State cut Utah’s second-quarter lead to 14-13 with a field goal with three and a half minutes until halftime.

From then on, it was all Utes.

Utah scored the final 17 points of the game to win comfortably. That all started with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive just before halftime that put the Utes ahead 21-13 on a Tyler Huntley touchdown run and including Huntley converting a fourth-and-1 on the drive.

Utah then outscored Washington State 10-0 in the second half, aiding by a Utes defense that rarely gave the Cougars much breathing room. Jaylon Johnson intercepted an Anthony Gordon pass in the third that led to a Derrick Vickers touchdown.

Then in the fourth quarter, Washington State’s best opportunity to put points on the board was squelched by the Utes on a goal line stand.

Utah also turned a late Cougar interception into the game’s final score.

Huntley’s big night

Huntley, the senior Utah quarterback, had another outstanding night, completing 21 of 30 passes for 334 and two touchdowns. That included four passes to Bryan Thompson for 111 yards and a 52-yard touchdown strike to Samson Nacua.

Huntley added 31 yards on the ground on just six carries and two rushing touchdowns.

Shutting door on Cougars’ offense

Washington State came into the contest averaging 52.7 points per game, but the Utes held the Cougars to just one touchdown in the blowout.

Utah held Washington State scoreless in the second half, only the second and third quarters that the Cougars have been held scoreless this season.

Washington State was just 3 of 12 on third downs in the loss and was held to 313 total yards, compared to 526 for the Utes.
