SALT LAKE CITY — Utah students in grades six through university are invited to submit an original essay concerning freedom of the press in conjunction with the annual McCarthey Family Foundation Lecture Series: In Praise of Independent Journalism.

Entrants will be divided into three categories: university and college, graduate and undergraduate (1,000 words); grades nine through 12 (750 words); and grades six through eight (500 words). Cash prizes of $4,000, $2,500 $1,500, respectively will be awarded.

The deadline for submission is Friday, Sept. 27.

Essays should explain the meaning of the following quotes and provide examples to support the explanation:

  • Grades six through eight: “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy.” — Walter Cronkite.
  • Grades nine through 12: “Power can be very addictive. And it can be corrosive. And it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.” — George W. Bush.
  • College and university: “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” — Thomas Jefferson.

To submit and essay, email a Word document, typed and double-spaced, to mkl@mklpr.com. All entries must include student’s name, phone number, email address and name, and department of the university or college, or name of the school and grade in which the student is currently enrolled.
