Letter: A welcome campaign

Letter to the Editor Deseret News

“Can multimillion-dollar, multi-agency suicide awareness campaign lower Utah’s suicide rates?” was an amazing article. I am glad that we as a state are addressing the need to change the stigmas surrounding mental health.

Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox was spot on when he said that they hope this new awareness campaign “will advance and modify attitudes and social norms to demonstrably reduce suffering and save lives.” As a former junior high school teacher I welcome this awareness campaign. I watched too many young people suffer in silence and even take their own lives.

Suicide has been a real battle in my own family. I come from a family of five kids, three of which have taken their own lives. I especially applaud Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, for recognizing that “suicides have not been looked at by the gun community, especially suicides with firearms.” Both of my brothers shot themselves and some of my former students took their lives with firearms that were in their homes.

Thank you for addressing this issue as well as hoping to rid the stigma of mental health issues.
