Letter: What if parents were the caregivers?

Letter to the Editor Deseret News

Concerning the need for affordable child care: I was a public school teacher who provided “affordable child care” for other working parents while teaching subjects the children need to know — besides providing love and support for the children.

Babysitters these days earn $5/hr/child. At that rate I would have earned almost lawyer wages. What working mom would pay her child caregiver what she earns at her own job? None. Shouldn’t the child caregiver earn a good wage as well?

“Government should not be the only entity supporting families ... Working parents need to know that their kids are safe and receiving care in a reliable and nurturing environment.” Yes, they should. But imagine that the working parents are the safe, caring, reliable, nurturing caregivers. What a novel idea.

A child needs a parent to really be a parent and care for the child. Which is more important to the world: A secure child raised by the child’s own parent(s), or fancy houses, cars and clothing?

Encourage parents to really care for their own children and not be so concerned for their own “personal fulfillment” and “me time.” Or, if you really want good child caregivers, pay the child caregivers what they should be worth to society; there will be more of them.
