HANKSVILLE, Wayne County — A man from Melbourne, Australia, was killed in a crash on state Route 24 on Friday morning, police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was driving east with his wife about 10 a.m. when they slowed to a near-stop in the road about 13 miles west of Hanksville, according to a statement from Utah Highway Patrol.
An SUV behind them did not see that the couple’s car had stopped and hit it from behind, causing the car to roll upside down off the road.
The husband was killed and the wife, who was seriously injured, was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Utah Highway Patrol said.
The two occupants of the SUV, who were from Austria and Switzerland, were taken to Sevier Valley Regional Hospital in Richfield with minor injuries.
All involved were wearing seatbelts, and investigators did not suspect drug or alcohol use to be a factor.
