Mitch McConnell won’t bring any gun bills to the Senate floor unless this happens first

McConnell said on ‘The Hugh Hewitt Show’ that he will speak with the Trump administration this week

SALT LAKE CITY — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he won’t put any kind of gun bill on the Senate floor unless President Donald Trump says he will sign it into law, according to CNN.

McConnell said on “The Hugh Hewitt Show” that he will speak with the Trump administration this week about whatever bills they’re prepared to support.

“Well, we’re in discussions about what to do on the gun issue in the wake of these horrendous shootings,” McConnell said, according to The Washington Post. “I said several weeks ago if the president took a position on a bill so that we knew we’d actually be making a law, I’d be happy to put it on the floor.”

McConnell said he expects to have an answer from the Trump administration this week.

McConnell hasn’t pushed through many bills from the Democratic-majority House of Representatives, including some that focus on gun legislation. The measures have reached a high point since there have been a wave of mass shootings nationwide throughout the summer.

Trump said on Sunday that the recent mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, “really hasn’t changed anything” in discussions between lawmakers and gun policies, according to The Washington Post.

Democrats have grown frustrated with McConnell, though.

“Time’s up, @SenateMajLdr,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) tweeted after Saturday’s Texas shooting. “Let’s vote on gun safety legislation NOW. Every day you wait, more tragedies happen. Do something, Senator McConnell. America is done waiting for you.”

Some of the discussions include red flag laws, which would allow an individual like a family member or law enforcement official to petition the court to help take guns from certain people may be considered a threat, according to Politico.

Democrats want more than that, though. Several have asked McDonnell to bring a bill to the floor that would explore universal background checks. That bill doesn’t have any Republican support, though.
