NFL locals: Why Matt Gay’s coach allowed a delay of game penalty to push back his potential game-winning field goal attempt (+Week 3 highlights)

There were some positives and a handful of frustrations for former Utah and Orem High kicker Matt Gay during Tampa Bay’s 32-31 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.

The most puzzling thing, though, involved the rookie Buccaneers kicker’s game-winning field goal attempt on the game’s final play.

After New York rallied from an 18-point deficit to take a 32-31 lead with 1:16 to play on a 7-yard Daniel Jones run, Tampa Bay got into position to retake the lead when quarterback Jameis Winston completed a 44-yard pass to Mike Evans at the Giants’ 9-yard line. With 13 seconds to play, Winston spiked the ball to stop the clock, which would have set Gay up with a chance to hit a 26-yard field goal from the right hashmark to win the game.

Instead, Tampa Bay took a 5-yard delay of game penalty before a 2-yard loss on a kneel down to set up Gay with a 34-yard kick from the center of the field.

Gay missed the 34-yard field goal attempt on the game’s final play, pulling it just wide right.

It had been an up-and-down day for Gay, who had made field goals of 47, 27, 52 and 23 yards earlier in the game. Gay, though, was just 1-of-3 on extra-point attempts, missing one wide left and having another blocked from nearly the same distance as his final field-goal attempt.

When asked about the delay of game, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians told reporters postgame he took it on purpose.

“Yeah. That field goal’s easier back five yards. No sense in hurrying. We wanted to move that ball over, put it in the middle and make it easier for him,” Arians said.

On Monday, the coach gave a slight clarification to the situation.

“We didn’t go out there intentionally to take a penalty,’’ Arians said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “When I saw the umpire standing over the ball, the thing I didn’t want was a 10-second runoff, confusion. Set it up, put it in the middle of the field and kick an extra point.”

Buccaneers staff writer Carmen Vitali reported that Winston made sure to show support for his kicker after the game.

Winston wasn’t the only one to back the team’s kicker.

“I told him, “Take your time, let it marinate.’ It’s going to hurt for a while,’’ Buccaneers running back Peyton Barber told the Tampa Bay Times. “But I said, “Don’t let this define you. This doesn’t define you as a kicker or a man.’’’

That support was appreciated by the Utah native.

“It means everything to me. It means everything to know they have my back in moments like this,’’ Gay told the Times. “Jameis just told me to keep my head up. He said to keep my head up because they’re going to need me again this year.’’
