One cat perished in the blaze
WEST VALLEY CITY — Firefighters pulled multiple pets from a house fire Tuesday afternoon, according to West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Bridger Williams.
“We lost a cat, saved four dogs and two other cats,” he said, adding that a few animals had to be resuscitated. “There were probably another 10 or 15 reptiles inside of the home.”
Williams said the accidental fire started in the garage at approximately 4 p.m. at 5568 W. Herdon Way in West Valley City, but officials could not find the exact cause of the fire.
He said the garage contained combustible liquids like gas and oil that might have been a contributing factor to the fire.
There were no people or animals in the garage when the fire started.
One person inside the home attempted to save the animals from the fire, but was “overcome with smoke,” according to Williams. That person was later checked and was found to be uninjured.
Because the home sustained heavy damage, residents of the home, along with their pets, have since found alternative places to stay.
