‘Fly More Than You Fall’ has been getting attention from Broadway insiders — and for good reason

SALT LAKE CITY — If you’ve followed our arts coverage lately, you might’ve read about “Fly More Than You Fall.” We’re betting this won’t be the last you hear about it.

The Utah-bred musical concludes its test run this weekend at Utah Valley University, where it’s been drawing attention from Broadway insiders. Read on for more details about the show — and about some other fun stuff happening in Utah this weekend. We’ve got “Friends,” “Flights of Fancy” and much more.

‘Fly More Than You Fall’

Riding a wave of considerable buzz, as well as significant interest from Broadway’s investors and producers, “Fly More Than You Fall” has become Utah’s hottest homegrown theater production. It concludes its trial run this weekend at UVU. The musical tells of a 14-year-old girl dealing with her mom’s cancer diagnosis. The show’s creators, Eric Holmes and Nat Zegree, both lost parents at a young age, so the musical hits close to home. “We created the show because we needed the show,” Holmes told the Deseret News. “It’s hard to find the right vehicle to tell that story.” Sept. 27-28, 7:30 p.m.; Sept. 28, 2 p.m., The Noorda, Faculty Annex, UVU, Orem, $35-$45 (uvu.edu/thenoorda)

National Geographic Live: ‘From River to Rim: Hiking the Grand Canyon’

Grand Canyon National Park turned 100 this year. Writer Kevin Fedarko and photographer/filmmaker Pete McBride walked 800 miles (no trail) through the canyon, and at Kingsbury Hall they’ll present discoveries from the harrowing excursion. ‘Flight of Fancy: Mystique’

Aerial Arts of Utah is back for its eighth annual “Flight of Fancy” show. The performance includes aerial and trapeze artists doing all kinds of eye-popping stuff. According to the event page, “Magic abounds in our fairytale fantasy world as aerialists push the limits of their apparatus and their bodies, transporting people to places where the confines of physics and reality seem to melt away.” Yowza. ‘Friends 25th: The One with the Anniversary’

“Friends” premiered on NBC 25 years ago and became a true cultural sensation. To celebrate the anniversary, Fathom Events is rolling out multiple nights of special “Friends” screenings in movie theaters across America. This weekend’s screening (Sept. 28) features the following classic “Friends” episodes: “The One with the Prom Video,” “The One Where No One’s Ready,” “The One the Morning After” and “The One with the Embryos.” Make sure to arrive a few minutes before showtime, where theaters will also show archived “Friends” interview footage from the show’s very first week of production.
