North Summit’s Elizabeth Zwahlen and Rowland Hall’s Carson Burian capture individual titles after narrowly missing out as sophomores last year

SALT LAKE CITY — As the sixth of 10 siblings, Elizabeth Zwahlen has watched many older siblings run cross country at North Summit through the years, with several even contributing to state championships.

On Wednesday though, the junior accomplished something no other Zwahlen has before her — claim an individual state title.

Zwahlen enjoyed a near wire-to-wire win at the 2A state championships at Sugar House Park on Wednesday, crossing the finishing line eight seconds ahead of Monticello’s Adri Bird.

“It was definitely as painful as I thought it would be. My goal was to set the pace the first two miles and then pull away hopefully in the third mile and I was able to accomplish that,” said Zwahlen, who said it was awesome to be the first from her family to claim first place.

Zwahlen attributes a lot of her success to finishing second at state as a sophomore.

“I’m grateful for it in ways cause it gave me motivation to do my best this year and it gave me something to fight for,” said Zwahlen, who said eight of her nine siblings were there cheering her on Wednesday along with about 20 cousins.

She wasn’t the only one who used last year’s heartache as motivation to win a title.

Rowland Hall junior Carson Burian was a third-place finisher at state last year but on Wednesday he outsprinted Wasatch Academy’s Christopher Korir over the final 100 meters on the track at Highland High School to win his individual 2A title.

“I tried to go out a little conservative because it’s a tough course and I went out a little bit slower than I would’ve liked to, and so I tried to make it up in the second mile and a did, and the third mile was all mental trying to get through it with no one in front of you,” said Burian.

His individual title was instrumental in leading Rowland Hall to its first team title since 2013.

Rowland Hall had its top five runners all place in the top 25 as it finished with 49 points, to narrowly edge Millard with 52 points.

Jack Lange placed sixth for Rowland Hall, followed by Logan Bateman in eighth, Max Eatchel in 19th and Cyrus Johnston in 25th.

“All season we’ve been training really hard, we’ve known we’d be in a title contention spot since the beginning of the season and everyone had a lot of motivation going into it,” said Burian.

Monticello, North Summit and Kanab rounded out the top five boys teams.

On the girls side Millard dominated with its superior depth to claim its second straight 2A state title.

Millard’s top five runners all finished in the top 15, and even its non-scoring sixth and seventh runners placed in the top 30.

“I’m really proud of these girls, they stepped up well,” said Millard coach Cody Moat. “Anytime you come to the state meet you can’t plan on everything happening perfectly all the time. We knew that we could win, but … there are so many variables that can happen.”

One of those variables is last year’s champion, Katy Kelly finishing third. Moat said his junior was obviously disappointed but she’s thrilled her team won the team title aided by teammates Audrey Camp finishing fifth, Ember Moat in ninth and Kara Camp in 10th.

Millard won with 32 points, followed by Parowan in second with 62 and North Summit in third with 70.
