Juvenile arrested in connection to shots fired at Granger High School

WEST VALLEY CITY — A boy was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with shots fired on the campus of Granger High School last month, the Granite School District said.

The gunfire occurred during the third quarter of a football game at the high school the night of Sept. 13, the district said, but the shots were not fired in the stadium area. Nobody was injured and most of the people at the football game were unaware that anything happened, the district reported.

The suspect, who was described as a runaway minor, was taken into custody that night along with seven other people but was released the next morning because there was not enough evidence to hold him, the district said. He does not live in West Valley City and is not a student in the Granite School District.

More evidence surfaced after his release, and the boy has now been taken into custody again on investigation of weapons possession, aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm, and trespassing, the district said.

The arrest was the result of cooperation between the Granite District Police and Utah Transit Authority police, the district said. Police monitored TRAX activity in plain clothes after several leads came in claiming the boy had been seen using public transportation. Utah Transit Authority police took him into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
