Russell Patterson is absolutely correct when he writes that “these students will inherit the world we leave them,” and so it has been for all generations of youth since the beginning of time. In his argument against fossil fuel energy, Mr. Patterson cited a poll asserting that 70% of young adults believe climate change will harm their generation.
Just how much a changing climate will harm mankind is very much open to scientific inquiry and political debate. For now no one can accurately forecast how much the reduction of fossil fuel use will actually have on controlling our global climate.
If America’s youths want to tackle an issue that will surely harm them in years to come, they ought to focus their energy on protesting the profligate spending of our federal government. With a national debt of $22 trillion and legacy entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare on a rapid path to insolvency, today’s youths are much more likely to be harmed by economic crises than they are by rising sea levels, assuming that the latter calamity even happens.
