MountainStar Healthcare Star Athletes of Week 10

Football

Zak Thacker, Wasatch (Sr.)

Zak Thacker had his best game of the season in Week 10 as he carried the ball 34 times for 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wasps to the 28-27 overtime win over Springville.

He’s accounted for 45% of Wasatch’s offense all season.

“Zak Thacker has been the workhorse all season for the Wasps, with 254 carries and 18 catches on the season is averaging 27 touches a game,” said Wasatch coach Steve Coburn. “His level headedness and toughness has helped lead this Wasatch team to 6-4 this season.”

He’s rushed for over 100 yards in six straight games and will look to continue the trend in the 5A state tournament first round this Friday against Hillcrest.

Girls soccer

Mackenzie Breiter, Mountain View (Jr.)

Junior Mackenzie Brieter enjoyed a week that most players only dream of.

Breiter scored the game’s only goal in Mountain View’s 1-0 upset over Farmington in the 5A second round and then followed it up with a hat trick in a 3-2 quarterfinal win over Murray.

“Mackenzie has stepped up and provided the spark that our offense has really needed to win these first three rounds of the 5A state tournament. We’ve scored a total of four goals as a team thus far in the tournament and she’s finished each of them. I couldn’t be happier for her,” said Mountain View coach Brent Hirschi. “She’s a great kid who doesn’t seek or want any of this type of attention for herself, which makes it all the more fun to be a part of. She prefers to deflect it all back on her teammates. She can turn and shoot on a dime, and score from anywhere on the field. And I believe she is just starting to scratch the surface in terms of realizing her potential.”

Breiter now leads Mountain View with nine goals, four of which came in the playoffs.

Volleyball

Lauren Jardine, Lone Peak (Jr.)

Junior outside hitter Lauren Jardine has been instrumental in Lone Peak’s 11-game winning streak as it heads into the final week of the regular season.

Jardine is hitting .319 on the season with 338 kills.

“Over the last month Lauren has worked diligently at making some positive changes in her game. She has been a huge part of our offensive success. I’m really proud of her effort,” said Lone Peak coach Reed Carlson.

Girls cross country

Kate Allred, Ogden (Sr.)

Kate Allred a dominant performance at the Region 10 championship at Cottonwood Complex last week in the final tuneup before this week’s state championships.

Allred finished first with a strong time of 18:53.9, which was 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher from Uintah.

“Kate is dedicated and determined. She has laid her foundation by being very consistent with her training, running six times a week, around 50 miles a week, including two hard workouts. She is one of the team captains and shares her passion for running by supporting and encouraging the younger runners on the team,” said Ogden coach Mischelle Allred.

Allred finished 15th at state last year and will be one of the top contenders at this year’s meet.

“Kate understands that consistency is what builds a great distance runner, and trains all summer for the fall cross country season. But what really makes Kate a great runner for the Tigers is that she is a smart and fierce racer. Cross country races are about 3 miles long, which makes this sport about being smart and patient. Kate knows how to be smart at the start of the race, be patient, then systematically hunt down the competition as the race progresses. As the race goes on, and the distance starts to add up, it gets harder to push the pace, but Kate is fierce and continues to pass runners, pushing hard all the way through to the finish.”

Boys cross country

Reese McGrath, Park City (Sr.)

Reese McGrath claimed the Region 8 title with a very strong final kick last week at Spanish Fork Sports Park.

McGrath outkicked a strong Region 8 field in the final 100 meters to win with a great time of 15:41.4, which was 2.8 seconds faster then the second-place runner from Springville.

McGrath has enjoyed a tremendous senior season for Park City after finishing 51st at last year’s 4A state meet as a junior.
