THE STAKES

For California: The injury riddled Bears need two more wins to become bowl eligible — good news for them and bad news for some sponsor.

For Utah: The Utes are trying to keep pace with USC in the Pac-12 South. The Trojans own the tiebreaker with five games left to play.

THE TRENDS

For California: These Bears have been hibernating as of late. They’ve scored just 41 points over losses to ASU, Oregon and Oregon State.

For Utah: There’s no place like home for the Utes. They’ve won eight straight games at Rice-Eccles Stadium dating back to last season. A ninth is expected.

THE CRYSTAL BALL

California: Somehow, some way, the Bears find a way to replicate the last meeting — a 28-23 victory in Berkeley in 2016.

Utah: The Utes are heavy favorites in this one. It remains to be seen what the defense can do for an encore after shutting down ASU.

PLAYER TO WATCH

BRADLEE ANAE, Utah defensive end: The senior is the new mayor of Sack Lake City after getting three in last week’s 21-3 win over ASU. Cal gave up nine sacks in a loss to Oregon State.

KEY MATCHUP

Utah’s offense vs. Cal linebacker Evan Weaver: The national leader in tackles with 105 brings his productive skill set to Salt Lake City.

California won 28-20. California used a goal-line stand as time ran out to beat Mississippi, the Bears’ first road win over an SEC school since 1977 and the Pac-12’s first since 2010. QUOTABLE

“We have to perform better. Our margins are very thin and we’ve got to perform at a higher level in every phase of the game to win.” — California coach Justin Wilcox

”There is no looking past anybody. There is no being distracted about what is going on elsewhere in the league as far as who is positioned where, it’s all completely focused on the Bears.” — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham

NEXT UP

California has a bye next week, while Utah faces Washington in Seattle on Saturday.
