Sophomore QB Zach Wilson had surgery on injured right hand Tuesday, BYU spokesperson confirms

School says it is anticipated that Wilson will return before season ends, while one report says he has a fractured right thumb and will miss 6-8 weeks as Jaren Hall takes the reins of Cougar offense.

PROVO — BYU sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson had a “surgical procedure on his injured right hand” recently, a BYU football spokesperson confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

No timetable was given for Wilson’s return, but BYU’s Brett Pyne of the school’s sports information department said the injury is not season-ending.

“It is It is anticipated he will be able to return to play this season,” Pyne said.

Wilson sustained a fracture on the right thumb of his throwing hand in the 28-21 loss to Toledo last Saturday while attempting to tackle the Rockets defensive back who had intercepted Wilson’s pass in the final minutes of the game.

Former BYU defensive back Ben Criddle, host of a radio show on ESPN 960 AM in Utah County, reported on his Twitter account Tuesday morning that Wilson needed the procedure to “stabilize a fracture” on his throwing thumb.

“Recovery timetable estimated at 6-8 weeks,” noted Criddle.

After Saturday’s loss, BYU coach Kalani Sitake acknowledged that Wilson would miss a “significant” amount of games and that redshirt freshman Jaren Hall would take over as the starter.

The Cougars (2-3) have a bye this week and will meet South Florida on Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Tampa, Florida.

BYU hosts Boise State on Oct. 19, has a bye on Oct. 26, travels to Utah State on Nov. 2 and hosts Liberty on Nov. 9, a little more than six weeks away.

The Cougars host Idaho State on Nov. 16 and travel to UMass on Nov. 23. They conclude the regular season on Nov. 30 at San Diego State and are slated to play in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24 if they are bowl eligible.
