Around and around: New roundabouts at I-80 Jeremy Ranch interchange now open

One of two new roundabouts at the I-80 and Jeremy Ranch interchange, this one on the eastbound side of the freeway, is pictured on Tuesday. The new, two-lane roundabouts were designed and constructed as part of Summit County’s “Let’s Go Summit” initiative to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at the interchange while also improving connectivity for cyclists, pedestrians and transit users. According to Derrick Radke, Summit County public works director, the roundabouts have been a long time in coming. “We’ve commissioned several traffic studies and concept reports over the years which, in the end, determined that two large-diameter roundabouts at the interchange would be the preferred solution to reduce congestion based on cost and performance through 2050. We’re excited to hit this major project milestone.” The roundabouts are significantly larger than others in Summit County, with an inner diameter of 219 feet and an outer diameter of 244 feet, which is about five times larger than the roundabouts on Kilby Road near Ecker Hill Middle School and twice as big as the roundabout near Walmart on Landmark Drive. While the roundabouts are open to traffic, work on lighting and signage will continue over the coming weeks. Work will suspend for the winter, and final paving and striping will take place in spring 2020.
