Highlights and key plays from BYU’s 56-24 win over UMass

BYU and UMass play at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass., on Saturday at 10 a.m. MST. | Jay Drew, Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — BYU had little trouble rolling to its fifth straight victory, beating fellow independent UMass 56-24 Saturday at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass.

The Cougars scored touchdowns on seven straight possessions in the first half to improve to 7-4 on the season, while dropping the Minutemen to 1-11 in its season finale.

Here are three takeaways that defined this game.

42-point second quarter

The Cougars got things rolling offensively in the second quarter after taking a 7-0 lead through one period. After BYU’s first touchdown of the second quarter — a 3-yard Lopini Katoa run with 14:15 until halftime — capped a 13-play, six-plus minute drive, the Cougars had five scoring drives that all took under three minutes, with three lasting 43 seconds or less.

Only one of those touchdown drives was set up by a turnover — a JJ Nwigwe interception set BYU up at the UMass 22 and the Cougars scored two plays later. The Cougars’ other scoring drives of the quarter were covered 88 (started in the first quarter), 48, 58, 59 and 59 yards.

There were two two-play drives and a one-play drive, when Zach Wilson threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Talon Shumway.

Offense puts up big numbers

BYU’s offense had an impressive day all around, putting up 628 yards of total offense. Wilson completed 17 of 20 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns in the first half before giving way to Joe Critchlow in the second half.

The Cougars had 440 yards at halftime, while averaging 10.23 yards per play in the opening two quarters before BYU’s backups played the second half.

Running back Jackson McChesney, playing just his second game as a Cougar, had a big day, rushing for two touchdowns — his first career scores — and 228 yards. He finished with a 15.2-per carry average on 15 carries.

Defense stands out in first half, backups struggle in second

Over the first 30 minutes, the BYU defense held down the UMass attack. The Minutemen had just 31 total yards in the first half and averaged just 1.19 yards per play.

BYU also forced two turnovers in the first half.

UMass got the better of the Cougars’ backups in the second half, though, outscoring BYU 24-7 after the break. The Minutemen ended up with 292 yards of total offense and pushed their per-play average to 4.36 by game’s end.

The Cougars emptied their bench, as 32 players ended up with tackles. Senior Dayan Ghanwoloku was one of four BYU defenders with five tackles and he added a tackle for loss.
