Letter: Give schools the counselors they need

Letter to the Editor Deseret News

In presenting HB81, Rep. Susan Pulsipher gives school counselors a voice. As a student at the University of Utah School of Social Work master’s program and a school social worker in training, I strongly support this bill.

Being a student, I understand how much time and effort it takes to become a school social worker. They are highly trained individuals equipped to be on the front lines of any situation that could arise. As stated by Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, R-South Jordan, “Some students report it can take up to weeks to see a counselor in their school.”

The demand for school counseling services is high. This bill will create a large impact for many populations such as low-income families — as well as prevent tragedies that could occur within a school environment.

Having a bill like HB81 is just the beginning to the difference school social work professionals can make. Breaking down the walls of the rise on bullying, school shootings and mental illness is at the forefront of the issues. Giving them as much time to fill with attending to student’s needs can be the key to creating a successful school environment for all students.
