More than 20 dogs seized from Roosevelt house

ROOSEVELT — More than 20 dogs were recently recovered from a vacant home in Roosevelt.

As of Monday, police and city leaders were still trying to get in touch with the owners of the property.

The investigation began on Oct. 14 when police responded to a call of dogs running loose in the area of 500 East and 650 North. “Upon arrival, officers found 20 to 25 small dogs running in the area,” according to a search warrant affidavit filed in 8th District Court.

Neighbors told police that the owners had moved out several weeks earlier.

“The neighbors state that someone comes and feeds the dogs periodically and that they have seen dead animals removed from the home on occasion,” according to the warrant.

Officers looking inside the window saw approximately 20 dogs.

“The smell of feces and urine is strong all around the home. Due to the ongoing threat to human and animal health, this warrant seeks to remove the animals until better living conditions can be found,” officers wrote in the affidavit.

After a warrant was secured, officers entered the house and recovered 19 dogs, police confirmed Monday. An additional four or five dogs were caught outside the home. Two dogs were found deceased inside the house and one in the yard, according to police.

Police have not said what breed of dogs were recovered. The animals were all taken to a local shelter and police said they will be placed for adoption.
