NEW HARMONY, Washington County — Detectives say a man killed in an explosion in southern Utah over the weekend may have tried to make an explosive device in a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Jordan Joseph Rinehart, 25, of Cedar City, was killed Saturday night when the device he was making unintentionally detonated, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Monday, the sheriff’s office said it was still investigating why Rinehart was making a explosive device, but doesn’t believe he had an intended target.

A witness told investigators that he and Rinehart went to a farm home in the 400 North block of Harmony Drive in New Harmony to care for some horses. It was believed to be the first time Rinehart had ever been to that residence, Washington County Sheriff’s Lt. David Crouse said.

After they were done with their work and were waiting for a ride, investigators believe Rinehart saw some items in the barn and came up with the idea to make an explosive device.

“The witness told investigators he was asked to come to the garage area where his acquaintance was working. The individual told the witness he was making an explosive device. The witness had turned to walk away when the device detonated, killing the individual making it,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

The witness was not injured in the explosion. A bomb squad went through the barn and did not find any other explosive materials.

The sheriff’s office stated that Rinehart was known to deputies. According to court records, Rinehart was charged or had already been convicted in several drug-related and DUI cases at the time of his death.
