Volunteer debate coach accused of sexual activity with student

SALT LAKE CITY — A volunteer assistant debate coach with the Salt Lake City School District has been arrested and accused of engaging in sexual activity with a student.

Henry Steven Olson, 23, of Taylorsville, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday for investigation of four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The activity happened within the last two years, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. The alleged victim was 15 at the time and Olson was 21.

“This sexual relationship lasted approximately five months, with several sexual encounters in that time,” a police affidavit states.

Olson is listed on the school district’s website as a volunteer debate coach for East High School. Wilking said Olson also assisted with students at Highland High School. Police would not say Wednesday which school the alleged victim attended.

A district spokeswoman said a letter was being prepared Wednesday to send to parents informing them of the situation.
