SALT LAKE CITY — Heavy fog — combined with an inversion — caused hundreds of delayed flights, a few dozen diversions, and a handful of cancellations at the Salt Lake airport Wednesday.
The airport had logged 249 delays as of 5:30 p.m., with an average delay of 40 minutes for departing flights and 70 minutes for arrivals.
Twenty-seven flights were diverted to nearby airports — including Provo, Grand Junction, Idaho Falls, Boise and Denver — and five SkyWest flights were cancelled altogether.
“It was a pretty high number (of delays) for today’s travelers,” said airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer.
Whether Thursday brings more delays hinges on the weather conditions, Volmer said. The smog is expected to stick around until an anticipated storm Sunday, according to the KSL Weather Center.
“It really depends on the fog,” Volmer said.
