Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen swears in the county’s nine-member PAWlitical Council at the Salt Lake County Government Center in Salt Lake City on Tuesday. The council, along with Mayor Dexter — a beagle — and Deputy Mayor Hoss — an English bulldog — will serve a two-year term representing Salt Lake County Animal Services at events across the county to share the importance of adopting shelter pets, spaying and neutering, and demonstrating how to be a model citizen for their breed. The PAWlitical Election, which is held every two years, is a fundraiser for the county’s Injured Animal Fund. According to county officials, this year’s election featuring 24 candidates — 21 dogs and three cats — raised more than $20,000, almost triple what was raised two years ago.
