After months of debate on surprise medical bills, Congress has decided to give up and stick a half-baked solution into a larger piece of legislation — a spending bill that has almost nothing to do with health care. How disappointing. I am highly concerned that the surprise medical billing debate will not stand on its own merit and that a bill might be put in a larger piece of legislation that has nothing to do with health care. On behalf of my family and the millions of people this will affect, I am asking Congress to let surprise medical billing proposals stand alone.
Being with average citizens day in and day out, I hear many different views and solutions. Surprise medical bills matter to people trying to make ends meet and take care of their families. Congress needs to take action in a way that honors the issue’s importance to these people. That means having a “stand alone” debate with a vote on legislation that specifically addresses this problem.
Our congressional leaders cannot make up for months of inaction by hiding their answer to the surprise medical billing issue in an unrelated bill. Let this important issue have its rightful, open debate.
