Letter: If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it

Gov. Gary Herbert recently proposed a $160 million tax cut. This is unnecessary and shortsighted. We need massive infrastructure improvements, a major (long-term) investment in public education, and thousands of low-cost housing units to be built.

There are so many wonderful uses for the surplus. Together, my husband and I would qualify for a tax cut of around $500 or $800 per year, which is less than we pay in daycare for our youngest son. Put together with everyone else’s $800 though, it could make a real impact on our state.

Our economy is strong, and if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Our roads and public education funding, however, are broken, so please fix them.
