TAYLORSVILLE — One person was killed and a second seriously injured when a shed collapsed in Taylorsville on Wednesday, sending the roof of the structure crashing onto the two victims.
The incident happened at a residence about 2:10 p.m. near 1900 West and 4700 South. On the property, in the backyard, was an approximately 15-by-15 foot shed, according to the United Fire Authority.
Unified fire spokesman Ryan Love said the shed collapsed, and the roof fell on two victims, killing one and trapping the other. A neighbor heard someone yelling for yelp and called 911, he said. Emergency crews arrived on scene three minutes later, Love said.
Crews used their heavy rescue equipment to lift the roof off the injured victim. That person was taken in serious but stable condition to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Love did not immediately know if the shed was something being constructed, if it was an existing structure that was being renovated, or if the victims were working on the roof specifically.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, but Love said all possibilities were being looked at, including whether recent heavy snowfall may have been a factor.
Westbound traffic from Redwood Road to 2200 West on 4700 South was closed while emergency crews responded to the incident. It was expected to open again by 4 p.m.
