Your Weekend: You really need to see Peter Jackson’s World War I doc ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’

“They Shall Not Grow Old” returns to select movie theaters on Dec. 7, 17 and 18. | Fathom Events

SALT LAKE CITY — Remember summer? We literally cannot.

Salt Lake is deep, deep in winter mode right now. If you’re brave enough to hang out outside, hit up the Hogle Zoo for its annual ZooLights. If you’d rather stay inside (and we wouldn’t blame you), visit the BYU Museum of Art’s exciting new exhibit, stop by the State Room for musician JD McPherson, pop in to the Gateway’s Urban Flea Market or visit select movie theaters for Peter Jackson’s astounding World War I documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old,” which returns to theaters for three nights only. Read on for details.

BYU’s ‘Supermarket’ pop art exhibit

The Museum of Art at Brigham Young University has rounded up pop art from some of the movement’s most influential figures for its newest exhibit, “Supermarket: Pop Art and 1960s America.” Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and yes, even a nun who compared Wonder Bread to the Eucharist — they’re all here. “We really wanted to get some of the most notable names in pop art,” MOA curator Ashlee Whitaker recently told the Deseret News. Dec. 6, 2019-March 28, 2020; BYU Museum of Art, Campus Drive, Provo; free (801-422-8287, moa.byu.edu)

JD McPherson Rock ’n’ Roll Christmas Tour

One of our most anticipated Utah concerts of the winter season, retro rocker JD McPherson brings his Rock ’n’ Roll Christmas Tour to the State Room on Friday. McPherson has become a Utah regular — particularly with the State Room — and this’ll be his second State Room visit of 2019. McPherson’s shows are a mix of “little bitty kids, 20-year-old hipsters, people my age, and then original rock ’n’ roll fans alike,” he told the Deseret News in March. “From the very beginning … they’ve all been pretty diverse in just about every way you could think.” Dec. 6, 9 p.m., The State Room, 638 S. State, $33, for adults ages 21 and older (801-596-3560, thestateroompresents.com)

ZooLights at Hogle Zoo

Now in its 13th year, Hogle Zoo’s ZooLights features more than 200 holiday-themed lights displays. It also includes a 135-foot tunnel lit up in all its Christmas glory, s’mores, hot chocolate and the Conservation Carousel. Dec. 6-Jan. 5, 2020, Hogle Zoo, 2600 Sunnyside Ave., $8-$10, free for ages 2 and under (801-584-1700, hoglezoo.org)

‘They Shall Not Grow Old’

Peter Jackson’s acclaimed World War I documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old” returns to theaters for three nights only. Jackson, best known for his “Lord of the Rings” films, spent years working on “They Shall Not Grow Old,” which painstakingly restores old film footage from World War I in truly dazzling color. Seeing this footage on the big screen is an experience you won’t want to miss. Dec. 7, 17 and 18, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., select Cinemark Theatres and Megaplex Theatres, $10.73-$15 (fathomevents.com)

Urban Flea Market

When it comes to Christmas shopping, the clock is ticking. Head to the Gateway for its Urban Flea Market on Sunday, which feature more than 80 vendors selling all kinds of unique handcrafted and vintage items. If you’ve got a picky person to buy presents for, this is a good starting point. Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., The Gateway, 400 W. 100 South, $2 for adults, free for ages 12 and under (fleamarketslc.com)
