SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man arrested for allegedly causing a fatal crash on New Year’s Day still had a blood-alcohol content of 0.085 four hours after the incident, according to police.
Wilonja Lusungu, 46, of Salt Lake City was arrested for investigation of automobile homicide-DUI.
Lusungu was driving in the area of 2700 South and 300 West on Wednesday when he collided with a car driven by Mavil Labra, 31, of West Valley City.
“The collision is still under investigation, however, initial evidence at the scene indicates that one of the vehicles involved failed to obey a traffic control device and speed appeared to be a factor,” according to a Salt Lake County Jail booking affidavit.
Labra was killed. Lusungu was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, and then booked into jail once he was discharged.
Officers who responded to the crash noted that “Wilonja smelled of alcohol, had red throughout, heavily bloodshot eyes, depressed facial features and obvious ‘cottonmouth,’ or a thick white foam across his tongue and teeth,” the affidavit states.
At the hospital, about four hours after the crash, Lusungu was given a Breathalyzer test and his BAC registered at 0.085, according to the affidavit.
