Pregnant woman loses unborn baby in auto-pedestrian accident

HERRIMAN — A 20-year-old pregnant woman lost her unborn child due to injuries sustained when she was hit by a car at an intersection in Herriman on Monday morning.

Police were summoned to the intersection of 4805 West and 11800 South by 911 callers about 7:16 a.m., according to Herriman Police Lt. Cody Stromberg. Upon arrival, rescuers found a 20-year-old woman with “critical injuries” who had been struck by an eastbound gray Kia Optima.

The woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and upon her arrival, police were told that the woman was near the end of her second trimester of pregnancy, Stromberg said.

“Despite excellent care from medical staff, the unborn child did not survive,” he said in a press release. “The female victim underwent surgery and is now in stable condition and expected to survive her injuries.”

Stromberg said the adult male driver of the Kia Optima remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators.

“No criminal charges have been filed against the driver at this time,” Stromberg said in the release.

There are crosswalks and safety devices at the intersection, but it’s unclear if the woman used those or if she was in the crosswalk at the time of the incident.

An investigation into what happened will be lengthy and complicated, he said.

“Investigators from the joint Southwest Salt Lake Valley CRASH team are working on reconstructing the incident and examining the events leading up to this tragedy,” the statement said. “Results of those investigations will likely not be finalized for several weeks, if not months, due to the complex nature of such reconstructions.”

After that investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges should be filed.
