FARMINGTON — A man who was just released from federal prison may be headed back after police say he robbed a shoe store just 10 days after getting out.

Nicholas Antonio Valencia, 19, of Salt Lake City, was charged Tuesday in 2nd District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony. Elencia Marie Vigil, 22, is listed as a co-defendant.

On Jan. 15, Valencia was released from federal prison after being convicted on a weapons offense, according to court records.

Just 10 days later, he and Vigil went to Famous Footwear in Bountiful, 420 S. 500 West, and tried to take several boxes of shoes, according to charging documents. When an employee attempted to stop them from leaving, Valencia pulled out a gun, the charges state.

“Vigil had dropped two shoe boxes in her running out the door. Vigil got away with one pair of shoes; Valencia stole two pairs,” the charges state.

Police from the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit, along with Valencia’s federal probation agent, identified Valencia in surveillance video taken from the robbery, according to charging documents.

“The gang unit assisted in locating Vigil and Valencia, both together in a vehicle. They were arrested,” the charges state. “A Glock 27 handgun was found inside the vehicle the two had been in when they were arrested.”

Charges were pending Tuesday against another man who was allegedly the getaway driver during the shoe theft, according to court documents.
