On Monday night, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill spoke to a group of people concerned about gun violence.
This subject is slightly ironic for him to talk about, as his office opposed a bill last session to disarm people convicted of domestic violence. The legislation, carried by Rep. Sue Duckworth, D-Magna, also would have required the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to contact local law enforcement when someone illegally attempted to buy a firearm.
When Rep. Casey Snider, R-Paradise, asked Gill’s office if they found any merit to the bill, they said they did not.
Domestic violence represents one out of three Utah murders. To date, I haven’t found a single case where the district attorney’s office has prosecuted anyone for illegally attempting to buy a firearm at a licensed dealer.
Remind me again about the virtue of gun control.
