Utahn charged with slashing wife’s throat as she was driving

SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a man who police say slashed his wife’s throat as she was driving.

Isac Garcia, 24, of West Valley City, was charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony.

On Feb. 17, a woman “ran into the hospital holding her throat with both hands and bleeding profusely from her face and neck,” according to charging documents.

Security guards at Jordan Valley Medical Center then noticed Garcia near the entrance, “covered in blood and holding a baby car seat containing an infant,” the charges state.

The infant was not harmed. Garcia put his arms up and said he had tried to kill his wife, according to charging documents.

Garcia and his wife were driving home from a party about 1 a.m., when the two began arguing, a police affidavit states. Garcia was sitting in the back seat with the child.

Garcia became angry, “produced a knife and began to cut her neck and face” as his wife was still driving, the charges state. He then jumped into the front passenger seat and allegedly told his wife to drive home, but she refused and drove to the hospital.

Doctors treated a 5-centimeter cut on the woman’s cheek and another 5-centimeter wound on her neck, the charges state.

Prosecutors have requested that Garcia be held without bail.
