SALT LAKE CITY — A North Carolina man faces numerous charges after police say he led them on a high speed chase before he was arrested and found to be in possession of a skimming device.
Antonio Jamont Fenn, 23, of Wendell, North Carolina, was charged Monday in 4th District Court with 24 counts of obtaining encoded information on a transaction card, a second-degree felony; failing to stop for police and reckless endangerment, a third-degree felony; and drug possession, a class A misdemeanor.
On Saturday, Fenn and two other men were spotted by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper driving 100 mph in an 80 mph zone on I-15, according to charging documents.
“The trooper turned on his lights and siren, but rather than respond, the car went faster, going at top speeds of 130 mph. The car passed other cars on the right, in the median, and shoulder of the freeway, dodging in and out of traffic at those high speeds,” the charges state.
The trooper terminated his pursuit as the car approached Utah County, according to a police affidavit.
“Multiple other agencies headed into Santaquin City where the vehicle exited the freeway,” the affidavit states.
A Santaquin police officer reported finding the vehicle abandoned in a residential area, and spotted three men walking away from the car a short distance away. When the officer attempted to talk to the men, they ran. All three were arrested.
A search of the car revealed marijuana and “a magnetic card skimming device,” and 24 gift cards, according to charging documents. All three men have a prior history of forgery, the affidavit states.
Skimming is when a device reads magnetic strips off debit and credit cards, records that bank card’s information, and then copies that information onto another magnetic strip such as a gift card.
Doron Dorion Burt, 23, and Damonte Rayquan Husband, 23, were also arrested, but but as of midday Monday, no formal charges had not been filed against them.
